A valuable point of yoga is you should feel comfortable when practicing a posture. Props like yoga blocks help support the body, provide height, help you balance, and aid to maintain safer alignment.
Similarly, yoga props can increase the effectiveness and maximize the benefits of a posture. Surely the benefits of yoga blocks help both beginning and advanced yogis.
Of course, there are numerous ways to explore the option of using a yoga prop during class. However, for the purpose of this blog post, I will only review the three different heights or sides of a yoga block.
While a variety of blocks exist the most common are the same shape, made from cork, wood, or foam. With this in mind, the three different heights or sides apply to all three blocks styles.
The Different Sides of Yoga Blocks:
ption: Short Side
Second Option: Long Side
Third Option: Broad Side (Wide Side)
While different heights are suggested for many asanas you should place the block at the height you find most comfortable.
*According to B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga The Path to Holistic Health (2001) the measurements of the block should be about 9 inches (23 cm) x 4.5 inches (12 cm) x 3 inches (7 cm).)
